Uses:
The lemony flavor and floral aroma of coriander make it a common spice in Asian, Latin, and Indian cuisines, as well as European cuisine. The seeds of the coriander plant are used to make coriander spice, which is found in the Indian spice mixture garam masala, which is used for many savory dishes. Although the leaves are known as cilantro or Chinese parsley, the seeds are used as coriander spice.
History:
Coriander was planted as a spice crop in the Anatolian region of present-day Turkey and spread to the Levant, Egypt, Armenia, and southern Russia early on. The Egyptian papyrus dated 2500-1550 BCE specifically names and describes the plant as a medicinal plant. Some of the earliest surviving recipes for stews, inscribed in Akkadian script on clay tablets in Mesopotamia, included it with just a handful of other spices.
